Diesel, hybrid versions of Ford's big SUV in works To combat high fuel prices that are bedeviling sales of big, profitable SUVs, Ford Motor Co. plans to offer a more fuel-efficient version of the Expedition. The vehicle could be powered by either a new European V-8 diesel engine or a gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain.

as fast as the Chrysler factory at Belvidere, Ill., can crank

Lincoln Town Car on the ropes
Plant
closure, low sales could sink venerable flagship Ford Motor Co.
has informed the Canadian Auto Workers union that it won't move
the Lincoln Town Car to a plant in Ontario, putting the venerable
luxury nameplate in jeopardy. Ford plans to idle the Wixom, Mich.,
plant, where the Town Car is assembled, during the second quarter
of 2007.

Canadian firm will sell electric car in U.S.
A Canadian
company plans to start selling a tiny $10,000 electric car in
the United States by the end of July. The Zenn is a French-built
two-seat hatchback that can go about 35 miles on a single charge
of its lead-acid batteries and is limited to a top speed of 25
mph.
Panel: Watch as China's carmakers go global quickly
Chinese carmakers will become global players in less time than it took Japanese and Koreans manufacturers, a top DaimlerChrysler executive predicts. "Within five to eight years, you will see (the) Chinese producing cars all over the world," said Ruediger Grube, DaimlerChrysler's board member for corporate development.
